PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Event collateral and exhibition design for “Anniversaries and Meetings – Ahn Eak Tai, Bartók and Dohnányi”.
Momentous meetings were commemorated by the exhibition and the concert “Anniversaries and Meetings – Ahn Eak Tai, Bartók and Dohnányi” organised jointly by Hungary-Korea Society and Korean Cultural Center on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Ahn Eak Tai’s birth.
Ahn Eak Tai (1906–1965) is a Korean composer, conductor and cellist, composer of the Korean National Anthem, “Aegukga”. His most notable work is the symphony “Korean Fantasy”.
He visited Hungary in 1936 for the first time to meet Béla Bartók and Ernő Dohnányi. These meetings had great impact on his subsequent musical career. Ahn returned to Budapest in 1938 after receiving a scholarship provided by the Hungarian government, and studied music at the Academy of Music between 1939–1941.
To celebrate the 110th anniversary of his birth and the 80th anniversary of the meeting with the two giants of Hungarian music, Ahn Eak Tai’s Korean Fantasy, together with Dohnányi’s Cello Concerto and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra were performed by the Dohnányi Orchestra of Budafok and the Budapest Academic Choral Society, under the baton of Gábor Hollerung at the Liszt Academy of Music. The concert also featured Korean cellist Mun Taeguk, winner of the 2014 Pablo Casals International Cello Competition, Budapest.
The exhibition was organised at the Grand Hall of Corvinus University, Budapest.
–
The collateral's main illustrative component is a pixel based composition of the three portraits of the composers. As of the exhibition we were requested to showcase all the provided documents on Ahn's life – original photographies and printed materials from private collections as well as photocopies of sheet music, travel documents, certificates of studies, letters etc. Because of the very different mediums, formats and quality of these materials we decided to unify them by making black and white photo copies and stick them chronologically on the provided movable wall panels. The originals received their places in the three display cases.
The two tricolour palette (Vermilion red/Curcumin yellow + Dark navy blue + Black) differentiated the collateral materials for the exhibition and for the concert from each other.

Zoltán Kocsis passed away on 6 November 2016, aged 64, in his native Budapest. To pay tribute to his genius, we placed an Easter egg on every printed material.
