PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Visual identity for the Korean Film Festival in Hungary.

The Korean Film Festival in Budapest hosted by the Korean Cultural Centre celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2018. This occasion provided us with the opportunity to redesign its visual identity. The goal was not smaller than to create a coherent, contemporary looking new system which communicates both Korean and Hungarian qualities within, and can be altered through the upcoming years.

We developed a grid-based dynamic logotype incorporating the KFF abbreviation, the symbol of the play and the pause button – in a geometrical manner – and the always changing typography (featuring name, place, date – in Korean, English and/or Hungarian).

One of the inspirational sources was the shapes of the Korean alphabet. The names of the different sections in Hungarian are mirrored, and they remind us the often symmetrical shapes of Hangul. Moholy Sans provides the beautiful letterforms to achieve this feeling of similarity. The date and the colouring should be changed yearly and the content can be altered within the established grid system to ensure visual continuity in the identity.

The posters featuring specific movies are placed in the system of the KFF grid – vertically, diagonally or horizontally – therefore the system outgrows itself enabling creative solutions beyond the drawing board.

The opening event took place at Urania National Film Theatre in Budapest and was opened by CHOE Kyoo sik, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Hungary. The audience was gifted with tote bags and the program booklet.

In addition to the capital’s events three cities joined the film festival – Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs.

The festival continues to feature the Korean cinematographic heritage in Hungary and we are proud that we had the opportunity to be a part of this cultural mission.
